Every year on the first Thursday of March, the UK celebrates World Book Day, a moment to honour the power of books and the joy of reading. In a world where screens dominate our attention, books remain a steadfast companion, offering comfort, escape, and knowledge. As someone who carries a book everywhere and reads about a book a week, I find this day a perfect opportunity to reflect on why reading still matters deeply.
Why Books Still Matter Today
In public spaces, it’s common to see people glued to their phones, scrolling endlessly. Yet, I often notice I’m the only one reading a physical book. This contrast highlights a simple truth: books offer something different from digital distractions. They invite us to slow down, focus, and immerse ourselves in stories or ideas without interruption.
Books provide:
Comfort during tough times
When life feels overwhelming, books can be a refuge. They offer a chance to step away from stress and enter another world, whether it’s a classic novel or a new story.
Mental stimulation and growth
Reading challenges the mind, improves vocabulary, and expands understanding of different cultures and perspectives.
A break from screens
With so much time spent on digital devices, books offer a welcome rest for the eyes and a chance to disconnect.
The Comfort of Classics
I have a special fondness for classic literature. These books have stood the test of time because they explore universal themes—love, loss, identity, and morality—that remain relevant. Reading classics can feel like joining a conversation that spans generations.
For example, novels like Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen or To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee offer insights into human nature and society that still resonate today. They provide not only entertainment but also lessons and reflections that help us navigate our own lives.
How Books Help Me Through Difficult Times
Recently, I’ve been going through a challenging period. Books have been a source of comfort and escapism. Carrying a book everywhere means I always have a way to shift my focus and find peace, even if just for a few minutes.
Reading allows me to:
Escape reality temporarily
Gain new perspectives
Feel connected to characters and stories
Find inspiration and hope
This personal experience is shared by many who turn to books when life feels uncertain or difficult.
Making Reading a Habit
Reading regularly can be a challenge, especially with busy schedules and endless distractions. Here are some practical tips that help me maintain my reading habit:
Carry a book everywhere
Whether it’s a physical book or an e-reader, having something to read on hand makes it easier to use spare moments.
Set realistic goals
I aim for about a book a week, but I adjust based on the book’s length and my schedule.
Create a reading-friendly environment
Find a quiet spot with good lighting where you can relax and focus.
Join a book club or reading group
Sharing thoughts about books with others adds motivation and enjoyment.
Encouraging Others to Read
World Book Day is also a chance to encourage others to pick up a book. Sharing recommendations, gifting books, or simply talking about what you’re reading can inspire friends and family to explore reading.
For those who feel overwhelmed by the idea of reading, starting with short stories, graphic novels, or audiobooks can be a great way to build confidence and interest.
The Future of Reading
Even as technology evolves, books continue to adapt. E-books and audiobooks make reading more accessible, while libraries and bookstores remain vital community spaces. The key is to keep the joy of reading alive, no matter the format.
Books remind us of the power of stories to connect us, teach us, and comfort us. On World Book Day, let’s celebrate that timeless joy and make space for reading in our lives.
